Mental Health:
Listening Beyond the Silence

We live in a world where violence exists on a continental, structural, and individual level, leaving many feeling enraged and hopeless.

That is why it is essential to raise a generation of individuals who can become safe spaces for one another, an army of healers who can respond to various forms of violence and affirm the lived experiences of all. One part of this work is demystifying mental health struggles and making mental health services accessible. Unfortunately, mental health support is often seen as euro-centric and unattainable in the African context, and people only seek it when deemed mentally ill.

It is now more evident than ever that we need revolutionary investment in mental health worldwide. Mental health and wellbeing are shrouded in medical jargon, creating a barrier for many who could benefit from support. Our goal as mental health practitioners is to allow people to articulate their feelings and challenges, removing barriers for them to feel safe to speak. Silence can also provide a valuable way to hear what a person is saying. We must embrace the healing process and journey to address the normalisation of pain, suffering, and surviving. Mental health and wellbeing need to be streamlined in our communities, and we must prioritize our mental health without feeling guilty or ashamed. In summary, we need to create a culture where mental health and wellbeing are valued and prioritized, and everyone can seek the help and support they need to heal and thrive.
